The Two Things You Need to Be Successful with FedEx Routes

There are simply two variables you need to control to be successful as a FedEx Ground contractor. The first is you need to manage your people. And, the second is you need to manage your fleet.

If you have taken care of your people and your trucks at the start of each day, you're probably going to have good days. If you cannot recruit and retain your team, or you have a bad repair and maintenance program, your days are going to be pretty difficult.

This business is not rocket science. Your team needs to take a cardboard box from a warehouse to someone’s doorstep. However, you need to have the people and the trucks to complete that goal over and over.

This business is not rocket science. Your team needs to take a cardboard box from a warehouse to someone’s doorstep. It’s not more complicated than that. However, you need to have the people and the trucks to complete that goal over and over.

So all of the focus of your operations, if you are going to succeed in this business, needs to be on recruiting and retaining a team and repairing and maintaining your fleet.

People

When clients ask us how our consulting differs from our free content, it’s this: we get into the operational weeds with you. We walk you step-by-step through how we complete these actions in our own active contracting organization.

Our entire training mindset is to teach you how to effectively recruit and retain FedEx Ground drivers. How to do the same with your managers, and ensure that they are setting up your team for success. We look at how to contingency plan 3 to 4 layers deep. What happens if a driver walks off the job? What happens if a driver walks off the job and another driver is out on vacation? What happens if a driver walks off the job, another driver is on vacation, and your manager is sick?

Trucks

We also teach fleet strategy. Whether you are a current contractor or a prospective contractor, you have to have a great fleet strategy. When should I buy trucks? Should I buy a used truck or a new truck? When do I sell trucks?

Many contractors simply run their trucks into the ground until the wheels fall off. That is a bad strategy. You cannot operate with that strategy and achieve your maximum profits. We have the math to prove that.

You can operate your fleet into the ground and survive, but you will not achieve excellent profit margins unless you have a more solid, thoughtful fleet strategy.

Our team works out fleet strategies that are custom to each route. The answers to your critical questions will be different if you have rural routes versus urban routes. Or, high mileage routes versus low mileage routes.
